The corn husk, reimagined.

The Engineered Corn Husk
a new, alternative wrap for tamales

Developing a new
tamale wrap

The Engineered Corn Husk represents over four years of experimenting to create the better tamale wrap.

Having worked with tamale manufacturers for over 20 years, we know the unique advantages of natural corn husks.  However, we are also aware of some of the challenges of corn husks including inconsistent sizing, availability,  cleanliness and mold.

The Engineered Corn Husk possesses the three most important characteristics of natural corn husks: porosity, strength, and naturalness. It can be substituted for natural husks without any changes to the tamale-making process.

Porous

A natural corn husk has porosity. During cooking, this means that steam and/or broth can pass through and transfer the corn flavor to the tamale.

Strong

A twofold consideration, as husks display strength when both dry and wet. The ridges or “veins” present are a key component of this, lending structure and tensile strength.

Natural

The distinct yellow hue, the earthy smell, and the unmistakable taste, our product retains these innate attributes of a natural corn husk.

Key Features

Rounded Corners

To prevent the edges from catching while rolling tamales, we rounded off the corners.

No Dyes

We do not use any dyes or coloring in our process – the slightly darker color of our husk is a natural byproduct of our process.

Made from Natural Corn Fiber

We use post harvest corn fiber for our product which helps to retain the taste and aroma of natural corn.

Clean Edges

Crisp and precise lines with no fraying.

Not Treated with Sulfur Dioxide

Sulfur dioxide is a preservative that natural husks must be treated with prior to importation. Though rare, some individuals have sulfite sensitivity. Our product is not treated with sulfur dioxide.

Uniform Sizing

By using our product there is no waste from throwing out incorrectly sized husks.

Ridge Texture

More than just a texture, the ridges in our product minimize tearing by imparting 2-way stretch.

Long Shelf Life

Our process allows us to dry our product to a much lower water content than natural corn husks. A dryer product means less chance of mold and a longer shelf life.

How to use

Our product has been carefully designed to look, feel, and behave like a natural corn husk. This means that it can be used just the same. To increase pliability, we recommend wetting prior to use. Anywhere from a quick dip in water to a longer submersion will work just fine.
